In August 1973, General Kim Jong Il visited Pyol Kumgang which was referred to as Mt Kumgang in Mt Kumgang. He looked around the fascinating natural landscape such as the peaks composed of myriad shaped rocks and cliffs, a pond formed by running falls dashing upon the white rocks to present a picturesque view and so on.
When he reached the pond, he said that he had heard many times before about this pond which was called the Lake Chon in Mt Kumgang and as the proverb said, seeing was believing. He continued that he sank in deep thoughts looking at this beautiful pond in Pyol Kumgang of Mt Kumgang, while he was wrapped in solemn feelings when looking down at the Lake Chon on the top of Mt Paektu, the sacred mountain of revolution.
Then he asked one official who visited many countries in the world if he had ever seen such a beautiful spot in other countries.
“Every country has its own beautiful mountains. However, there could not be found any one as beautiful as Mt Kumgang. When I met many people abroad and told that I came from Korea, they said ‘Oh, Mt Kumgang!’ and all greeted me happily as if they met a friend.” he answered.
The General agreed with what he said and told with great pride that in our country everywhere was beautiful, and especially Mt Kumgang had already been well known all over the world as the collection of all beauties, therefore it had been not only much loved by our people but also admired by the world people.
His words, indeed, implanted the ardent love for and great pride of the beauty of the fatherland in the hearts of our people.
He smiled brightly with deep emotion and repeated the name ‘Pyol Kumgang’ again and again, saying that the scenery here was so peculiar that it was named ‘Pyol Kumgang’, and Pyol Kumgang deserved to be called as Mt Kumgang in Mt Kumgang.
And then he said that in the future Mt Kumgang should be built well into a resort of culture and rest so as to make people enjoy it to the full.
He continued in a resonant voice full of ardor that it was his ideal to build and develop our country, which was restored and founded by President Kim Il Sung, into the one as beautiful as Pyol Kumgang.
Peerlessly great man General Kim Jong Il’s words, which were implied with the lofty ideal of patriotism in every phrase, reverberated throughout the graceful Mt Kumgang ranges leaving solemn echoes.
