Pyol Kumgang area of Mt Kumgang is the scenic spot covering Kumgang Pond and the beautiful places around Sonchang Stream which stems from the valley between the ridges of Mt Obong and Mt Sonchang.
In this area, cliffs and waterfalls are low in height and pools are small in size as compared with other areas, but they are characterized by dense and successive arrangement.
Kumgang Pond, which was once called the Lake Chon of Mt Kumgang, is oval shaped like an egg with the length of 26m, the width of 50m and the depth of about 1m.
The pond is surrounded by cliffs all around and it is mysterious and beautiful as if a small lake were moved on top of the mountain.
The white sand is spread along the south side of the pond which is enclosed by inclined rocks, and pine trees are growing fresh and green in the west. One can doubt how such a place could come into being up above the mountain.
And there is a legend that fairies came down here and enjoyed sightseeing. The legend says that this place where fairies descended and enjoyed themselves has a scenery so special for Mt Kumgang that it was named Pyol(Extra) Kumgang.
If you ascend Sonnyo Peak-the observation post of Pyol Kumgang, you could get a view of Mt Sonchang far to the west, Mt Obong to the southwest, Chottae Peak to the southeast, Samdok to the north and range of mountains to the northwest.
Pyol Kumgang, which is as beautiful as a perfect picture, has become a cultural resort for the people and a leading tourist attraction under the warm care of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
