“Sijung” means the name of the highest government post in Koryo dynasty. From old times the scenic beauty of its surrounding area considered to be the best, so it is called “Sijung Lake”. The name of pavilion behind the lake is “Sijung Pavilion”. The bottom of lake is made of thick layers of mud. It is widely used to cure the several diseases.
According to the legend from old times in the area of Sijung there lived a person named Jonggak who was good-natured and diligent. One day when he was having a rest at the lakeside after picking up the firewood he saw a heron flying up with a crab in his mouth and the crab was holding fast to the grass. Jonggak hit down the heron with a stick. The heron the wing of which was hit went into the water after flapping its wings.
After some years later Jonggak felt a pain in all his joints and also in his limb, so he could not do the work properly. But he endured his pain and went up the mountain to pick the firewood. One day he managed to reach the lake carrying a heavy burden of firewood but could not go on, so he fell asleep while massaging his limbs.
When he got up after having a dream of flying over here and there he came to see lots of crabs coming out of and going into the lake with mud of the sea in their mouths. To his surprise he raised his body and came to know that the crabs were covering his body with mud of the sea. Among them was the crab that he rescued last time. He moved his body. And he realized that the pain in his body had disappeared and after washing up the mud he felt relaxed and refreshing.
Since then the mud of the Sijung Lake became wildly known as the wonder drug for neuralgia and this place was frequented by many people.
